Uniform Resource Locator (URL), also known as Universal Resource Locator, is a Web-related term that holds two distinct meanings:

  • In most technical documents it is a synonym for Uniform Resource Identifier (URI). In more popular and colloquial usage, it means a web page address, not to be confused with an IP address.
  • Strictly speaking, it is a condensed string of characters that stands in for a resource available through the Internet. The concept of a uniform and recognizable syntax for global identifiers of network-retrievable documents was one of the founding ideas of the World Wide Web. In the early times, these identifiers were variously called "document names", "Web addresses" and "Uniform Resource Locators".
