Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), are cryptographic protocols that offer secure communications on the Internet for the purpose of such activities as web browsing, using e-mail, performing Internet faxing, taking part in instant messaging and other data transfers. A secure connection through an SSL Certificate is often indicated with an HTTPS as opposed to a simple HTTP in the url.
