Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) is a computer bus designed primarily for the purpose of transfering data between a computer and mass storage devices, such as hard disk drives and optical drives.

The main advantages are as follows:

  • SATA provides faster data transfer
  • SATA offers the ability to remove or add devices while operating (this process is called 'hot swapping')
  • SATA employs thinner cables that allow air cooling to work more efficiently
  • SATA has a more reliable operation with tighter data integrity checks
