Registering .co.uk domains

You can register a .co.uk or .org.uk domain name. Currently, the UK registry uses an email interface, which means that commands are not executed in real-time.

Contact information modifications are not immediate and may take several minutes or hours for the Registry to update. To avoid unnecessary delays, we highly suggest using the pre-configuration page on the shopping cart if you are registering domains with different information than your billing data.

NOTE: First time registrations of all .uk names have a 2 year minimum. A renewal cannot be issued until at least five (5) months prior to the domain's expiration date and effects of a renewal do not occur instantly.

Registering a UK domain

When registering for a UK domain name, you will encounter a "registered on behalf of" text field. This is a new change implemented by the Registry, Nominet. Now, when you attempt to register a UK name (co.uk/org.uk) you will be required to preconfigure it not only with the type of registration, but also "who or what" the domain is registered for.

This new field is free-form text so you can type in practically anything. Typically, you will put the organization name there if you are buying for a company.

It is the registrant's responsibility to determine this field. We say "this cannot be changed easily," because it really cannot be changed easily. To change this field, the registrant has to pay Nominet a fee and fax in a form. This is up to the registrant, not eNom. This field shows up in the WHOIS for a UK domain as in the example below.

WHOIS Query Result

  • Domain Name: exampledomain.co.uk
  • Registrant: Robert Jones
  • Trading As: Jones and Associates

Customers may want to change this. To Nominet (the UK registry), changing this field is known as a transfer because it legally changes the owner of the domain to some other party. Transferring to another registrar is known as a tag change.

NOTE: There is a significant cost from the Registry to the Registered owner to make this change.

Company Identification Number

When you are purchasing a .co.uk domain name, you may be asked for a Company Identification Number. This number is not required for an individual.

If you are a company, you will need to check with your organization's staff to inquire about your ID number.

Leave the field blank and it will process the registration as an individual. Do not enter N/A or NA. Please leave the field empty.

UK domains name servers

Domain names ending with .uk require a minimum of two name servers. Name server changes/updates may take several hours to process. Please be sure to enter nameservers on the pre-configuration page of your shopping cart to avoid unnecessary delays.
