Operating system support

An operating system (OS) is the software that manages a computer's resources and allows programmers to access those resources via an interface. Using system data and user input, the OS responds and allocates and manages tasks and internal system resources as a service to users and programs of the system. The OS also controls and allocates memory, prioritizes system requests, controls input and output devices, facilitates computer networking, and manages files.

Usually, the initial code executing on the computer is usually loaded from firmware, which is stored in Flash ROM - it is not the OS. This is sometimes called the BIOS or boot ROM. The firmware loads and executes the operating system kernel (usually from disk, sometimes over the network), and is usually responsible for the first graphics or text output the user sees onscreen.

Common contemporary desktop OSes are Linux, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows and Solaris. Windows is most popular on desktops while Linux is most popular in server environments. We offer the following OSes for installtion with our dedicated hosting solutions:
