Mail Server Error
From SuperbHosting Support Wiki
There can be a few reasons why you get a mail server error when sending mail through our mail servers. A common practice with most Internet providers today is to prohibit users on their networks from sending mail through SMTP servers outside their network. This is to thwart viruses from propagating through email and spam from being sent from unauthorized mail servers inside their network. Since we cannot control the practices and policies of these Internet providers we have instead setup our mail servers to listen for connections on both port 25 (often blocked by Internet providers) as well as port 8025. If your mail client is giving you connection errors you may want to try using port 8025 for SMTP in your mail program - its usually under the Advanced section of most mail clients because its not a very common setting to change.
Our mail servers prohibit mail from being sent through them (not to them) from outside Internet providers unless the people sending mail through our mail servers authenticate using their username and password. The most common reason to receive an error while attempting to send mail is that the authentication settings for SMTP are not setup correctly in the mail software on your computer.
Please review the SMTP settings in your mail software and ensure that the appropriate authentication settings are made. Outlook requires "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication" to be checked but not "Secure Password Authentication (SPA)" to be checked. Thunderbird simply requires that the SMTP username and password be filled out correctly and it will automatically attempt to use authentication when sending mail. Pegasus requires the "Allow authentication" setting to be checked in the Sending Mail section.
