Lock & Unlock Domains

From SuperbHosting.net Support Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Depending on your domain name, the lock/unlock domain link is not visible from the domain control panel. Some TLDs do not have a registrar lock feature. Examples are:

  • biz
  • info
  • us

The above domains are protected by EPP keys. In order to transfer these domains, you must obtain the "key" from the current registrar. Only the registered owner will have access to this key, for your protection.

NOTE: A registrar lock serves the purpose of preventing unauthorized transfers of a domain.

Waiting period after unlocking a domain

After you have removed the Registrar Lock, please allow 12 to 24 hours for the updated lock status to fully propagate through the global registry. Once the domain status is active, you will be able to successfully transfer your domain to another registrar.

Unlocking a domain if a registrar goes out of business

Typically, a registrar will not go out of business, but rather a reseller for that registrar might close down.

However, if a registrar was going out of business, more than likely another registrar would purchase their client base of domains and you would contact the new registrar to have the domain lock removed.

If you are listed as the registered owner, you will always be the registered owner of an active domain, regardless of whether or not the reseller goes out of business.

Removing a lock or change DNS while pending transfer

If a domain is being transferred away from SuperbRegistrar and is in pending transfer status, the domain will still appear in your account, but you will not be able to make any updates to the DNS information or registrar lock fields.

If you try to remove the lock or change DNS, you will get an error.

After a domain transfers away from SuperbRegistrar, we do not purge the domain immediately. Therefore, it will still appear in your account for a few days with the old settings. If you try to remove the lock, the system will not let you because the domain has already transferred away.
