GNOME is an internationally collaborated effort to build a finished desktop environment entirely from free software. Achieving this goal requires creating software development frameworks, choosing application software for the desktop and working on the programs which manage application launching, windows and task management and file maintenance.

GNOME is part of the GNU Project and can be used in conjunction with various Unix-like operating systems, including Linux, and as part of Java Desktop System in Solaris.
