Firmware has come to describe the programmable portion of a hardware device. This programmable content can consist of machine language instructions for a processor, or configuration settings for a fixed-function device, gate array or programmable logic mechanism.

Firmware has traditionally been stored in ROM, however monetary and performance requirements have pushed component merchants to adopt a number of replacements, including non-volatile media such as EEPROM and Flash, or SRAM solutions.
