Uploading files to your website via FTP
In order to connect to your website and transfer files via FTP, you will need the following information.
- Host Name - This is the location to which you will publish your files to. The host name is your domain name, including your domain extension. Examples of host names are exampledomain.com, or exampledomain.net. If your domain name has not been transferred yet, you can use your IP address instead of your domain name. You can find your IP address in the Welcome Email we sent you. You also can look it up via MyCP under the View Account Details area.
- Host Directory or Directory Path - This is the directory that will hold all of the files for your Web site. This is also known as your root directory. Your host directory will always be public_html.
- User Name - This is the user name for the account you will be using to upload your files. You FTP files using your primary user name. The user name was assigned and sent to you in the Welcome Email. If you forgot or misplaced it, please feel free to give us a call or open a ticket.
- Password - This is the password associated with the User Name you are using. You can reset your account password via MyCP under the Change Account Password area.
Filenames and Extensions
When uploading files to your web hosting account, remember these rules for filenames.
DO NOT:
- use spaces in your filename
- use special characters in your filename
- use punctuation marks in your filename (underscore and dash are OK such as file_name.htm or file-name.htm)
DO:
- Include the period between the filename and extension (filename.htm)
- Include the correct extension for your filenames (.htm, .html, .asp, .php)
- Use letters and/or numbers in your filenames
NOTE: Filenames are case-sensitive if you have a Linux hosting account.
What if I cannot access my site via FTP?
There are many reasons for you not being able to access your root directory via FTP. To troubleshoot the problem, make sure that:
- You are using the correct hostname or IP address to connect to the FTP server
- You are using the correct user name (use your FTP Login - do not use your CustomerID)
- You are using the correct password (passwords are case-sensitive)
- Your FTP client or FrontPage is configured correctly
- You do not have any billing issues or outstanding invoices
If you are still having difficulty connecting, please submit a support request via MyCP. Inform us of the program you are using, the settings, login name/password, and the exact error message you are receiving.
