Backup refers to the copying of data so that these copies can be used to restore the originals in the event of a data loss event. These additional copies are usually called "backups". Backups are incredibly useful and very important for those of us (pretty much everybody) who can't afford to lose the important data they have stored on their computers. In order to backup, one must have considerable storage requirements, and organizing this extra storage space and managing the backing up process can be difficult. However, there are many backup devices which focus on efficiency and portability which make it much easier to back up your files.

Listed are the primary functions of backup:

• To restore the state following a disaster (called disaster recovery)
• To restore files after they have been accidentally deleted or corrupted

Backups are typically the very last line of defense against a data loss disaster and as a result are usually the least convenient to use - though not as inconvenient as losing everything on your computer.
