BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System.

When an IBM PC is first powered on, a firmware code is run and this code is what is known as BIOS. It is the primary job of the BIOS to accurately identify and initiate component hardware (hard disk, floppy disk, optical disk). This is done in order to ready the machine so that the other software programs can load, execute and essentially take the helm of the computer. This is known more commonly as, booting, or booting up.

BIOS might also be referring to a program code embedded on a chip that recognizes and controls various devices that make up x86 personal computers.
